The Colombian was once again the protagonist of a big problem.

Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) “was disqualified from the 2022 Tour de France”, in which he finished sixth , due to a medical infraction, the International Cycling Union (UCI) announced this Wednesday.

“The Colombian runner Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas was sanctioned for violating the ban on the use of tramadol in competition,” the UCI explained in a statement.

However, the international body specified that it is not a “violation of anti-doping rules” andthat the cyclist can appeal within 10 days.

Tremendous problem

The UCI noted that the two dried blood samples provided by the rider were analyzed on July 8 (stage 7) and July 13 (stage 11)during the 'Grande Boucle' and revealed the presence of tramadol, an analgesic that is not on the list of prohibited substances by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

However, the issue happens because Arkéa is affected in its promotion to the World Tour (WT) next year, that is, it will have the option of contesting the most important races on the calendar, a right that is earned, for the moment , thanks to its good ranking.

With this inconvenience of Nairo, it is clear that both the runner and the French group lose points in the rankings, but they still remain within the WT group.

Many points at stake

Quintana, for his sixth place in the last edition of the Tour de France, received 400 points.

In addition, he won 50 units for his second place stage at the Granon and five for fifth place on the day ending at Longwy.

In this way, it remains in the table with 14,186 points in box 15, it would only lose one place with the Cofidis team, but it is within the group of 18 teams.

However, the season is yet to end and although it is clear that Arkéa would not lose that privilege, it is true that it did not count that this subtraction of key points for the ranking.
