Brazilian Armed Forces guarantee that There will not be another coup attempt like the one carried out by thousands of radical Bolsonaro supporters on January 8 in Brasilia, Defense Minister José Múcio said this Friday.

“Do not have the slightest doubt that another (episode) like that will not happen because the Armed Forces will anticipate it,” Múcio told reporters, after participating in the meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the military leadership. .

This was the first meeting between the president and the Army commanders, General Júlio Cesar de Arruda; from the Navy, Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen; and the Aeronautics, Lieutenant Brigadier, Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, since the assault on Brasilia on January 8.

That day, thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, a retired Army captain, invaded and caused serious damage to the offices of the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court, in an attempt to overthrow Lula and return the far-right leader to power.

Bolsonaro, who is currently in the United States and during his administration (2019-2022) filled the government with soldiers , is being investigated in the Supreme Court for inciting his supporters to attack democracy.

Múcio said that this matter “was not discussed” at the meeting, but indicated that “the military are aware and agree” to “take measures” against those involved in the coup attempt, including some suspected members of the armed forces active and reserve.

“I understand that there was no direct involvement of the Armed Forces. If any element, individually, participated, it will respond as a citizen, ”he noted.

The minister also stressed that “everyone was outraged” with the assault on the three powers, although he called for moderation in the accusations “in the heat of emotion”.

Lula, who took power on January 1st, stated last week, at a breakfast with journalists, that believes that “many” soldiers and police were “colluding” with the coup leaders who looted public buildings, which has generated a certain climate of mistrust between the ruler and some sectors of the armed forces.

However, Múcio affirmed that Lula expressed in the meeting this Friday his “enthusiasm” and “faith” in the work of the current military leadership, and conveyed to them his objective of modernizing the three forces, as he already did in his first two mandates, between 2003 and 2010.

“We have to pacify this country, we have to govern”, said the minister, who said that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the most urgent needs of the three forces.
