The biggest sale in 30 years: Princess Diana's things will go under the hammer

Items worn by Princess Diana in the 1980s will be the most valuable items at an auction in Los Angeles. It will also feature her letters, accessories and more than 200 items from members of the royal family.

In particular, two evening dresses are expected to sell for the most money. They want to fetch almost $400 thousand for each of them, writes Sky News.

The auction house Julien's Auctions has already called this collection the largest collection of Diana's personal belongings put up for auction since 1997, when the princess gave dozens of her dresses as lots for a charity event in New York. This happened shortly before her tragic death in a car accident in Paris.

By the way, a pair of dresses sold at the New York sale will headline an upcoming event, which will take place at The Peninsula Beverly Hills auction house.

One of the dresses for which they plan to get the most was created by designer Murray Arbid. Diana wore this strapless dark blue evening dress twice in 1986 — to the premiere of The Phantom of the Opera and dinner with King Constantine of Greece. The following year, she wore it again for the performance of Cinderella at the Royal Opera House.

The second evening dress from the most valuable lots was designed by Victor Edelstein. In lace, off-the-shoulder dresses, Diana shone at events in the UK and Germany in 1987.

Julien's Auctions co-founder and chief executive Martin Nolan noted that Diana was the “princess of thrifting.” She re-wore dresses not only for environmental reasons, but also to support new names among designers.
