The American president has serious family problems
|
On Thursday, the US Department of Justice announced federal charges against the president's son, Hunter Biden, related to the illegal possession of weapons, after the failure of the settlement agreement in July, reports NBC News.
The charges concern three articles of illegal possession of weapons. Two are related to false statements about firearms, and the third – possession of a firearm by a person using drugs.
This is about the episode of October 2018, when the son of the president of the United States “knowingly made a false and fictitious written statement” when buying a Colt Cobra 38SPL revolver: from an arms dealer in the state of Delaware, he said that he does not use drugs.
Hunter Jr. possessed the weapon “approximately from October 12 to 23, 2018”. On all three counts, he faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.
American lawyers note that charges brought against the son of the US president are rarely prosecuted. In addition, the clause on possession of a weapon while under the influence of drugs is still being contested in the courts and may eventually be declared unconstitutional. By July, Biden Jr. and prosecutors reached a settlement in the second investigation – on tax evasion, which provided for the refusal to declare the accused in relation to weapons. But the judge rejected the agreement, expressing concern about the alleged interference in the investigation.
