On Wednesday, August 31, the opening of the 79th International Venice Film Festival took place, Reuters reports.

The grand opening took place on the stage of the Cinema Palace in Italy. During the event, the legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve took the stage. The actress was awarded the “Golden Lion of St. Mark” for contribution to world cinema and career achievements. At the same time, the film White Noise by American director Noah Baumbach was screened.

The international jury is headed by the winner of the Oscar Julianne Moore. Hollywood stars — Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Penelope Cruz also participate in the competition entries. The actresses will compete for the Volpi Cup.

Laureates of the Venice Film Festival — Darren Aronofsky and Alejandro González Iñárritu will also come to the show. French director and playwright Florian Zeller will present a new film “Son” with Anthony Hopkins in the title role.

The work of 19 filmmakers will be screened out of competition. Among them are directors such as Paul Schroeder, Kim Ki-duk, Oliver Stone, Sergei Loznitsa, Gianfranco Rosi.
