Thailand wants to become the first Southeast Asian country to join BRICS – a geopolitical association of developing countries, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS).

The Cabinet of Ministers of Thailand approved a draft letter outlining the country's intention to join the group, reports “Voice” of America. ;.

However, experts believe membership could give Thailand, Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, mostly symbolic rather than concrete benefits, including free trade agreements with countries such as China that Thailand already has.

However, the administration of Prime Minister Setthi Thaweesin plans to launch the bid during the BRICS summit, which will be held in October 2024 in Kazan.

Thailand expects that membership in the organization would strengthen its role in international economic policy and expand its opportunities to participate in the “creation of a new world order,” government spokesman Chai Wacharonke said in a press statement.
