New York – Tennis player Barbora Strýcová played the last match of her career. The 37-year-old native of Pilsen ended her farewell tour with a loss in the mixed doubles quarterfinals at the US Open, where she was not enough alongside the Mexican Santiago González against the Japanese-Croatian pair Ena Šibaharaová, Mate Pavič 4:6, 6:7.

Former world number one in doubles, Strýcová ended her career due to pregnancy in 2021. After the birth of her son Vincent, she returned this April for a short tour. She took part in tournaments in Madrid, Rome, Birmingham, Eastbourne and the Grand Slam Wimbledon, where she won the doubles title, as in 2019, with Taiwanese teammate Xia Shu-wei. She said goodbye to the home audience during the Prague Open in August.

Strýcová definitively closed her career at the US Open. At the last Grand Slam tournament of the season, she was eliminated in the 1st round of the singles match against the Estonian Kaia Kanepiová, and her next match with Markéta Vondroušová in the doubles match was interrupted by her teammate's health problems before the round of 16.

On the WTA circuit, Strýcová won two singles titles and 32 in doubles. She triumphed in the team Fed Cup six times and, alongside Lucie Šafářová, also won bronze at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016. Her best singles ranking was 16th place, the furthest she reached in a Grand Slam was the semifinals of Wimbledon four years ago.

The Czech-Mexican couple started today's match against Šibahara with Pavič better and led in the first set 3:1. Since then, however, Strýcová and González have played only one game and lost the opening set after 34 minutes. In the second set, both pairs held serve until the shortened game. In an even ending, Strýcová and González managed to avoid one match point, but the other was already used by the opponents.
