The winner of two Grand Slam tournaments and former world number one Victoria Azarenka will not play at the exhibition tournament preceding the US Open tournament, the proceeds from which will go to humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Azarenka is a citizen of Belarus, a country that helped Russia organize its invasion of Ukraine in February.

At least one Ukrainian tennis player, Marta Kostyuk, questioned the participation of a Belarusian athlete in the Association tournament United States Tennis for Peace at Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York City.

The Association released a statement saying: “Over the past 24 hours, after careful consideration and dialogue with all parties, , [it was decided that] Victoria Azarenka will not participate in the event… Vika is a strong leader and we appreciate her willingness to participate. But, given the heightened reaction of the Ukrainian players and the ongoing conflict, we believe that this is the right decision on our part.”
