Teen accounts and parental controls will appear on Instagram

Instagram will release an update where it will tighten the restrictions on the accounts of minors and create parental control over them. This decision was made by the company against the background of growing concern about the negative impact of social networks.

Instagram writes about this in its blog.

From today on Instagram, users under the age of 18 will be able to create “teen accounts” that automatically apply a set of privacy protections for the selected age group.

Today we're introducing Teen Accounts on Instagram, a new parent-driven experience for teens. Teen Accounts have built-in protections that limit who can contact them, filter the content they see, and give teens new ways to explore their interests. We will automatically add teens to Teen Accounts. Users under the age of 16 will need parental permission to change any of these settings to less strict settings, Meta said in an official statement.

Basic Teen Accounts settings:< /h4>
  • Privacy Limits: All accounts for users under 18 will be private by default. Therefore, their owners will authorize new subscribers upon request. People who don't follow them won't be able to see their posts or interact with them.
  • Restrictions on messaging: Teens can only be messaged by people they follow or are with already contacted.
  • Content restrictions: for teens, the strictest privacy content controls are automatically set, so that, for example, videos of people fighting or ads for beauty treatments do not end up in the teen feed or in the carousel of short videos.
  • Interaction restrictions: Teens can only be tagged or mentioned in their posts by people they follow. “Teen Accounts” are also automatically enabled with an enhanced anti-bullying and anti-hate speech feature that filters out comments and requests in messages that contain offensive words and phrases.
  • Time Limit Reminder: Teens will be notified daily that they need to exit the app after 60 minutes.
  • Sleep Mode Enabled: “Sleep Mode” will be automatically enabled from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM :00, about which the user will receive a notification.

Teen Instagram accounts reflect the importance of adapting teens' online experiences to their developmental stages and implementing appropriate safeguards. Younger teenagers are more vulnerable because their skills are still developing and need extra protection. In general, settings depend on age, younger and older teenagers are offered different means of protection, commented Rachel Rogers, Ph.D., associate professor of the Department of Applied Psychology at Northeastern University.

Setting weaker security settings for teens under 16 requires parental permission. With Parental Controls enabled, parents can approve and reject their teens' requests to change settings.

Parents will now be able to track who their teens have texted in the past seven days. You can also set general daily time limits on Instagram: when a teenager exceeds the allowed limit, his access to the program will be blocked.

In addition, parents can block their teenagers from using the social network for a night or certain periods of time by clicking the appropriate button. In order to influence what content a teenager consumes on a social network, parents were allowed to view a list of topics that their child selected based on their interests as relevant for viewing among the recommended ones.

Next year, the Meta company intends to introduce ” Teen accounts” and on other online platforms. During the first 60 days, the function will be implemented for Instagram users under the age of 18 in the USA, Great Britain, Canada and Australia. Later, accounts of teenagers in the European Union will be added. Starting in January 2025, teenagers all over the world will be able to maintain proper “teenage accounts” on the social network.
