For two years now, a Chinese brand specializing in affordable and mid-price smartphones – Tecno Mobile has been operating in Ukraine. In the summer, the company announced the Tecno Spark 5 Pro (KD7), which went on sale in Ukraine in July 2020. Thus, the device has replenished the fresh line in which the Tecno Spark 5 and Spark 5 Air models are already presented. The editorial staff of Today.Lifestyle checked the characteristics of the smartphone and is now ready to share their opinion about this device in our review.

Before we start the review, let's look at what the manufacturer focused on when it released it to the Ukrainian market. The main “catchy” feature of the device – four cameras, including the main photosensor with a resolution of 16 MP – and this is in a budget device. The second interesting innovation is the eyepiece of the front camera embedded in the display, like in the top Samsung models. Now let's take a closer look at Tecno Spark 5 Pro.

Equipment

Tecno Spark 5 Pro packaging

In general, you do not expect anything particularly outstanding from the equipment of the “state employees”. As a rule, manufacturers save on everything. But Tecno Spark 5 Pro was able to pleasantly surprise. Firstly, the patriotic design of the box is blue and yellow in the style of the flag of Ukraine. Either this is positioning on the Ukrainian market, or it coincided.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro package contents

Secondly, the “rich” kit, which is not even found in every expensive smartphone. Tecno Spark 5 Pro comes with a silicone case for a smartphone, a white USB / microUSB charging cable, a 10-watt power adapter, a simple headset and a key to eject the SIM card slot, and a set of all kinds of documentation. It should be noted that there is a 12 + 1 month warranty card – a proprietary feature of the company's phones.

Case Tecno Spark 5 Pro

The set turned out to be relatively voluminous, as for a “state employee”. It is worth highlighting albeit a simple, but high-quality case with a pleasant texture and characteristic design for FC “Manchester City”. There are even port plugs to keep moisture or dirt out. In general, such attention to the packaging allows you to save on covers, which are not available for sale for new products at first.

Design and build quality

Front side of Tecno Spark 5 Pro

From the front side, Tecno Spark 5 Pro is not much different from other smartphone models – they are now all “on the same face”. The device is distinguished only by the eyepiece of the front camera in the upper left corner.

Therefore, as a rule, the back of the smartphone is responsible for individualization, which can be arranged as you like. The smartphone is released in four colors: Ice Jadeite, Spark Orange, Seabed Blue and Cloud White. In our version, the Tecno Spark 5 Pro back cover is made in a beautiful gradient color, smoothly flowing from black to turquoise, called Seabed Blue.

The bezels of the screen are quite narrow, which is even unusual to see in a “state employee”. The only thing is that the bottom margin of the frame is still unpleasantly wide.

The bezels around the Tecno Spark 5 Pro display are mostly thin, but a wide stripe stands out from the bottom

Despite the plastic case, the Spark 5 Pro is very well assembled, nothing creaks or backlash – the fit of all parts is excellent. It feels heavy in the hands – 170 grams, like some Galaxy Note 9, but unlike the Samsung flagship, glass in the case is not used here – all because of the large battery.

Ergonomics

Despite the fact that the Spark 5 Pro is a fairly large smartphone with a 6.6-inch screen (dimensions 164.7 × 76.3 × 8.8 mm), the smartphone lies confidently in the hands.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro in case

But the smooth surface in rare cases strives to slip out of the hands, for example, in the heat, when the palms become a little sweaty. Therefore, it is recommended to wear a cover to create better friction. And it will be safer. In this case, the case itself will turn out to be more durable, otherwise the glossy surface of the lid will very quickly become covered with scratches, streaks and stains.

The glossy Tecno Spark 5 Pro case gets covered with fingerprints very quickly

For those who find the screen large, there is a convenient one-handed control function, which is called from the curtain. In this mode, the screen shrinks and “sticks” to one of the lower corners, creating an emulation of a display with a smaller diagonal.

Location of controls

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Volume and power buttons Tecno Spark 5 Pro

All smartphone controls are located on the right side. In general, the location of the buttons on the left or right for convenience, I think is purely subjective. But in my case it is more convenient when all the control keys can be reached with one finger. In Spark 5 Pro, the volume and power buttons are separate, protrude slightly above the body, have a long travel and a clear response. Moreover, the power and lock button is colored red so that it can be visually distinguished.

The power / lock button on the Tecno Spark 5 Pro is highlighted in red

To unlock, you can use the fingerprint scanner located on the back of the smartphone. It works quite accurately and quickly. The only gripe: in the case, large fingers will barely reach the scanner due to the high profile of the cutout.

The fingerprint scanner works well overall, but is difficult to reach in the case

At the bottom there is a speaker, microphone and even a 3.5 mm audio output. Everything seems to be good, but the outdated MicroUSB port is already archaism in 2020. When will Tecno move to the more versatile USB Type-C?

MicroUSB and 3.5mm minijack ports, plus external speaker and microphone

On the left side there is a slot for two nano SIM cards and a separate space for microSD cards (up to 256 GB). Thus, when installing a second “SIM” card, the owner will not have to choose between memory expansion and a second phone number. Although there is enough memory here, as for a budget device – 64 GB (there is a 128 GB model), maybe someone will see the need to expand the file storage.

The large quad camera unit on the back stands out the most visually. Moreover, the platform with photosensors with a built-in flash is recessed into the body so that it does not stick out above the body, so the phone lies flat on a smooth surface.

Screen

As we already mentioned, Tecno Spark 5 Pro has a large 6.6-inch screen diagonal. The panel is elongated in a modern way and has an aspect ratio of 20: 9. It uses the IPS LCD panel, which has proven itself familiar to users of basic iPhone models.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro Screen

The resolution, however, is low – HD + (1600 × 720 pixels), which ultimately affected the pixel density – only 266 ppi. With such indicators, there should seem to be “graininess”, but in practice it is absent altogether – the image is very clear, the fonts are anti-aliased, there are no “jaggies”.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Tecno Spark 5 Pro Screen

The Spark 5 Pro has a natural color rendition without leaving warm or cool colors. Viewing angles are wide and without color distortion. We also note a good level of contrast.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Low resolution does not affect the quality of the picture on the screen – everything is clear and without “grain”

But the brightness is frankly not enough: to read information from the display without problems on a very bright sunny day. This may help a little to enable “dark mode”, which is activated in the settings.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

The screen is at maximum brightness on a bright sunny day – colors fade and information becomes more difficult to read

Also, for those who like to surf the Internet at night before going to bed, there is an eye protection mode that reduces the level of blue, taking the strain off the eyes. It is also worth noting an interesting option that can visually hide the front camera's eyepiece so that it does not stand out against the background of the screen by simply filling a black bar on top.

Performance

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Smartphone hardware

Tecno Spark 5 Pro is powered by a MediaTek Helio A22 (MT6762) 4-core processor with a frequency of 1.8 GHz. The GPU PowerVR GE8300 is responsible for the graphics performance. This is a budget chip, from which you should not expect record performance figures. The chip works in a coupe with 4 GB of RAM, and fast built-in flash memory of 64 or 128 GB eMMC 5.1.

Memory speed test: on the top – the results of the speed of the built-in flash memory, on the bottom – external microSD

Despite the budget filling, the smartphone works fast enough – no brakes or friezes were noticed. All interface elements are rendered and scrolled smoothly, applications are launched quickly and without severe delays. Watching HD videos on YouTube, flipping through social media or web pages in a browser, shooting a video – all this the phone does without any problems. And this is not least due to the fast internal memory, which produces 215 MB / s reading and 180 MB / s writing, which is almost twice as fast as from a memory card.

Adequate performance for everyday tasks

It would seem that such power for many games may be frankly not enough. This is partly true, projects such as PUBG Mobile and Shadowgun Legends suffer from a low frame rate per second – 22-25 fps. However, there were some pleasant surprises here too: Minecraft, Critical Strike, Asphalt 9, World of Tanks Blitz and the new Call of Duty Mobile are played quite fast, and give out the number of frames in the range of 50-60 fps at low settings.

Software

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

HiOS 6.1

Tecno Spark 5 Pro runs on Android 10 with HiOS 6.1 proprietary shell preinstalled. The manufacturer decided not to use the standard Android interface, but created its own launcher with its own wallpapers, icons, design, and also equipped it with a lot of additional settings.

There are preinstalled applications, but there are few of them: PHX and Chrome browsers, Facebook, a utility for optimizing a smartphone Phone Master, a music manager Boom Play, a utility for wireless file transfer between XShare devices and the Palm Store's own application store. Moreover, all third-party applications can be uninstalled. For complete happiness, the device lacks except for the NFC chip, which Tecno does not want to integrate yet.

Of the innovations, it is worth noting the built-in ability to launch certain applications using a fingerprint. The scanner can also take pictures, turn off the alarm, receive calls and even record them with a long hold.

Unlocking methods

Among the unlocking methods, there are several familiar ones (PIN, face, fingerprint), an extraordinary one has appeared. For example, from the lock screen, you can quickly open the front camera by swiping down diagonally near the peephole.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Battery

Tecno Spark 5 Pro has an integrated 5000mAh battery. Thanks to him, the smartphone turned out to be very “tenacious”. The lack of powerful hardware and a high-resolution screen only benefits autonomy. The device is effortlessly able to withstand a day of use in active mode, and in mixed mode even two days without recharging.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Battery

The PCMark 2.0 battery test at maximum screen brightness ran on the device for 10 hours and 27 minutes, which is quite decent. When playing HD video at 50 percent brightness, the smartphone lasted 18 hours. The downside of this autonomy is very slow charging – the complete 10 W adapter charges the smartphone for a little over 3 hours.

Camera

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Quad camera Tecno Spark 5 Pro

Let's move on to the main feature of Tecno Spark 5 Pro – a quad camera. The smartphone uses four photomodules: the main 16-megapixel sensor (f / 1.8) with PDAF autofocus, a 2-megapixel sensor for macro photography, a 2 MP depth sensor and a QVGA camera for automatic scene detection.

Camera interface and settings

In general, during the day and even in cloudy weather, the photos turn out to be good, slightly differing for better or worse from shot to shot. But the Spark 5 Pro did not bypass the problem of insufficient illumination – in this case, noise appears and detail suffers. In general, this is a typical representative of the budget segment, so you should not expect outstanding results.

Eyepiece of the front camera embedded in the screen

Macro mode is best done only in good lighting conditions. But bokeh effects work well, especially in frontal mode. The camera app has several modes: video, photo, beauty, blur, AR shooting and panorama. There is no separate night mode, as well as manual control of shooting parameters.

Outcome

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Tecno Spark 5 Pro

With a price tag of 3999 hryvnia at the time of writing this review, Tecno Spark 5 Pro seems to be a very attractive option to buy if you are not too demanding user. The device boasts a rich package bundle, a sufficient amount of memory, a high-quality assembly, a large display, various unlocking methods and an attractive appearance. The advantages include the multifunctional and flexible HiOS 6.1 shell, a separate tray for memory cards and SIM cards. The not the most productive platform nevertheless proved its ability to cope with all the tasks assigned to it, but the device is still not suitable for games.

Tecno Spark 5 Pro review: bright style and quad camera in an inexpensive smartphone

Tecno Spark 5 Pro

The only drawback was the proprietary quad camera – it's more of a marketing solution than a functional one. Although even they have interesting features like macro photography, hardware bokeh effect and scene detection technology, in fact they shoot no better, but no worse than competitors with two or three photosensors.

In general, Spark 5 Pro turned out to be a good smartphone in its price segment for adequate money.

As a reminder, we previously ranked the TOP 5 fashionable smartphones without screen cutouts. At the same time, the most expensive smartphone in the world began to be sold in Ukraine.
