Technical characteristics of the German high-precision mortar system Nemo revealed

Germany has approved the development of a new 120mm self-propelled mortar system based on the Patria 6×6 armored vehicle. The budget committee made the decision on January 29, 2025, within the framework of the Bundeswehr artillery modernization strategy. This will improve mobility, firepower and digital integration of units, writes Army Recognition.

The new mortar complex will gradually replace the outdated M113 and Wolf systems, which have already exhausted their operational resource. It is expected that Germany may use a variant with the NEMO system — fully automated 120 mm mortar, which provides fast and accurate fire support at ranges up to 15 km.

The NEMO system allows firing in volley and retreat» mode, which reduces the risk of enemy counterfire. The mortar is also integrated into the ADLER fire control system, which ensures effective coordination and accuracy of strikes. The project is expected to cost around 51 million euros, and from 2028 the funding will be transferred to the main defence budget.

The modernisation of the Bundeswehr mortar units is essential for the country's defence capability and for strengthening NATO's capabilities. The new system will provide Germany with effective means of mobile artillery support, meeting the modern requirements of combat operations and the digitalisation of the armed forces.
