The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan, on the instructions of the President of the Republic Emomali Rahmon, conducted a large raid against the spread of occult practices. During the raid, 1,500 people were detained who were engaged in “magic and fortune telling.” All of them have been registered, Rakhmon said at the opening ceremony of the State Institute for the Training of Highly Qualified Personnel.

According to Emomali Rakhmon, more than 5,000 mullahs who did not have official religious education were also detained during the raid. Back in the spring, the President of Tajikistan, at a meeting with religious figures, announced the spread of occult practices in the country and called for a fight against them. According to him, this phenomenon “pulls the country towards prejudice.”

In April, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan announced amendments to the legislation providing for a punishment in the form of forced labor for up to six months for those who engage in fraud and deceit by posing as healers, fortune tellers, sorcerers and talisman makers.

It was also reported that a special register of citizens using the services of fortune tellers and sorcerers was created. In August, the ministry reported that more than 150 people had already been added to the register.
