Symbol of Russian imperialism dismantled in Riga

A statue of Barclay de Tolly, a Russian commander and participant in the Franco-Russian War of 1812, has been dismantled in Riga.

“Esplanade Square has been freed from the symbol of Russian imperialism,” Vilnis Kirsis, the city's mayor, wrote on the X network.

The monument was a copy of the first monument to Barclay de Tolly, which was unveiled in 1913 and was demolished in 1915. The new monument was erected in 2002 on the initiative of Riga businessman Yevgeny Gomberg and in agreement with the city. The discussion of the monument's future after 2022 was accompanied by heated debate.

BAGNET reminds that Barclay De Tolly served as Minister of War of the Russian Empire in 1810-1812. He distinguished himself in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1791 during the storming of Ochakov. After the death of Mikhail Kutuzov, he was the commander-in-chief of the Russian-Prussian troops. After returning to Russia, he commanded the 1st Army. De Tolly was the mayor of Riga.
