Switzerland has applied to join the European air defense initiative

Neutral Switzerland has applied to join the joint European air defense project “Sky Shield” (ESSI).

As “European Truth” writes, Reuters informs about this.

According to a statement from the country's government, Arms Minister Urs Loehr signed the application to join the project on Monday.

ESSI member countries, which also include Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania, can now express their opinion on Switzerland's application.

After consultations, member states have two months to give their consent or express reservations about Switzerland joining the project, the government said.

In April, the Federal Council (Government) of neutral Switzerland approved the declaration of joining the project of joint European air defense “Sky Shield” (ESSI).

ESSI – is the German initiative for ground-based air defense (BODLUV) in Europe.

The initiative was launched in August 2022 and is based on the need to strengthen air defense in Europe and better join forces. Eleven countries have already signed the Declaration of Accession to the Memorandum of Understanding.

The purpose of ESSI is to better coordinate and, if necessary, combine air defense procurement projects in Europe to take advantage of economies of scale in system procurement and improve interoperability between partner countries.

In February, it became known that Turkey and Greece will officially join the German-led joint European air defense project “Sky Shield”.

From neutral countries, the initiative also takes the participation of Austria.

Read details about the initiative and why it divided the allies in the article “EuroPravda”.
