Switzerland may allow its weapons to be sold to Ukraine

Ten members of the Security Policy Committee of the Swiss National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, supported the proposal to allow other countries to supply Swiss weapons to Ukraine, Blick writes.

It is noted that another ten members of the parliamentary committee did not support Four more parliamentarians voted in favor of a proposal to amend the Swiss Law on Military Materials, which would allow indirect deliveries of weapons to Ukraine.

The decisive vote was that of the head of the committee, a representative of the Social Democratic Party, Seiler Graf. She stated that most members of the committee want to make changes to the relevant law, which would prevent the re-export of weapons to Ukraine.

The relevant bill is now to be considered by the National Council of Switzerland. If there are enough votes to support it, then the document will be submitted for approval to the Council of Cantons – the upper house of the Swiss parliament.

If the bill is still approved, then countries such as Germany, Denmark and Spain will be allowed to transfer Swiss weapons to Ukraine in the future.

Previously, Switzerland blocked Germany, Spain and Denmark from sending weapons of their own production to Ukraine.

As is known, the country maintains neutrality. Switzerland's permanent neutrality was secured by the Paris Treaty in the distant year of 1815. The Government of the country adheres to the legal obligations imposed on neutral states by the Gas Conventions of 1907.
