The Council of States, the upper house, supported this same proposal in June.

Increasing funding for the Swiss Armed Forces will allow military spending to reach 1% of GDP by 2030, rather than 2035 as previously planned.

Additional funds will be taken from a reduction in international development aid, spending on border guards, the federal police and intelligence service, increasing the effectiveness of the army, as well as additional revenues from the cantons.

The Swiss government has been talking about increasing defense spending since last year.
