According to the swimmer, at the school where she received her education, the attitude towards Russians was openly negative. In particular, the athletes representing Russia were classified as either alcoholics or those who are doping. There were jokes that the Nazis should have defeated the USSR, then the Russians would not have pushed into other countries. Negative statements were also aimed at her. Even Belogonoff's friends expressed dislike for the Slavs in general, but over time, the athlete simply stopped paying such attention.
Speaking about her last name, the swimmer explained that although her father was Russian, he had American roots. He eventually moved to Britain, where they could not understand why women and men have different endings of surnames, Match TV reports.
