Kevin Magnussen made the most of drastically changing weather conditions to secure a sensational pole position in his 100th Formula One appearance for the Haas team in Friday's qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix this weekend. As heavy rain poured down on the Interlagos circuit, the final session of Q3 ended in a euphoric riot with the popular modest 30-year-old Dane sitting in his car celebrating as the clock ticked down.

The driver became the first Danish polesitter and the first to achieve the feat for Haas in his 140th Grand Prix. Magnussen set a best lap of one minute and 11.674 seconds before one last storm raged during which Mercedes' George Russell crashed and was caught in a gravel trap.

The champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull was second fastest ahead of Russell and Lando Norris of McLaren. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz was fifth ahead of Esteban Ocon and his Alpine teammate, two-time champion Fernando Alonso, Mercedes' seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, Segio Pérez of Red Bull and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.

“I don't know what to say,” said Magnussen. “The team took me out on the track at the right time. First out of pit lane. Is incredible!” When asked to reveal his plan for Saturday's sprint, he smiled. “Max attack! Let's go for something really fun.”
