The Surface Duo is Microsoft’s hope of regaining a foothold in the smartphone market.
The innovative device will be available in Germany from February 18 – but the price is high.
It is one of the most exciting Microsoft projects in recent years: With the Surface Duo, the Windows manufacturer wants to regain a foothold in the smartphone market. This is a phone with two 5.6-inch screens. Not only the form factor ensures amazed faces, but also the software: Instead of Windows, the device runs Android. This step would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
The Surface Duo has not yet been sold in Germany. That will change next week: From February 18, the unusual telephone with two separate displays will be delivered in this country. It can be ordered directly from Microsoft or the retail chains Media-markt and Saturn. However, you have to dig deep into your pocket:
The “cheapest” variant with 128 gigabytes of storage space costs 1550 euros, the variant with 256 gigabytes of storage costs another 100 euros more (1650 euros).
Innovative, but not technically outstanding
The unique selling point of the Surface Duo are the two large screens.
The se are able to display two apps independently of each other or to stretch an application across both screens, as is known from computers with several connected monitors.
The n content is displayed on a total of 8.1 inches, larger than on an iPad mini. If two apps are open at the same time, files such as images or documents can be simply moved back and forth between the two programs using drag-and-drop.
Why the corona crisis made Apple even stronger
Technically, despite the high price, the Surface Duo is not state-of-the-art in every respect.
The built-in processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 855) is no longer the latest chip, six gigabytes of RAM can already be found in mid-range models.
The new 5G cellular standard is also not supported, and tests in the USA indicate that the camera is rather mediocre.
The battery life was also often described as below average.
The technical equipment of the German version is identical to the US model. In terms of software, Microsoft has already announced that it will provide an update to Android 11 for download by the summer.
The smartphone operating system has been offered by Google since September 2020.
Expensive market start in Germany
The fact that Microsoft is offering the Surface Duo in this country for 1550 euros is remarkable because it was already available for 1400 US dollars when it was launched in the US, which is the equivalent of 1150 euros (excluding taxes). In offers it was even available for less than 1000 euros.
