Where is the Star Wars saga?

For a few years now, the Star Wars license has been explored more on the small screen, via Disney+, than on the big screen. Since Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker in 2019, no Star Wars movie has seen the light of day. One could almost think that the saga is at a standstill, despite a few projects that randomly surface. For a time, Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was supposed to take care of his own trilogy. But it seems that Disney has decided to abandon this project. Likewise Taika Waititi was to take care of a Star Wars film, but again the subject is on hold.

Another aborted project was the idea of making a saga on the High Republic, directed by D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, the creators of Game of Thrones. But here again, Disney preferred to change its approach. In fact, the last project that still seems to be relevant is the film directed by Patty Jenkins called Rogue Squadron. The only one? Really? It seems that the big boss Jon Favreau is on another project.

A trilogy under the direction of Jon Favreau?

In fact, there is a project that is about to actually see the light of day, it is the film The Mandalorian & Grogu. Initially, this film should have been season 4 of the series The Mandalorian. But Jon Favreau preferred to treat fans to a feature film, expected on May 20, 2026 in theaters. For the moment, we do not yet know if Giancarlo Espositowill reprise his role as Moff Gideon, which he portrayed in during the three seasons of the flagship series of the Star Wars license.

In any case, even if the actor does not appear in The Mandalorian & Grogu, it would seem that he is aware of the Star Wars news. During an interview with Culture Slate, Giancarlo Esposito discussed Jon Favreau's plans for the Star Wars license. Since the release of The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau, the director of the first two Iron Mans and the actor who played Happy Hogan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), seems to be one of the masterminds of the Star Wars galaxy. According to Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Favreau would have plans similar to those of the MCU:

As with the MCU, Disney will find a way to connect all these characters and universes. This is, in my opinion, the logical next step. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have their own vision, and are developing it with The Mandalorian film. I have the feeling that everything will converge at at some point or another towards a new trilogy.

So nothing very concrete, but we generally agree with Giancarlo Esposito. It is hard to see how Jon Favreau would not have developed his long-term plans.
