< strong>It is increasingly common for private individuals to install “spy” applications on the phones of their loved ones, to monitor the actions of their children, spouses, colleagues, etc. These controversial applications are less and less present on traditional application “stores” like the Google Play Store or the App Store, but they can still be downloaded from the Internet as APK files. A data leak reveals the still significant use of this “spyware”.

Apps like TheTruthSpy, Copy9 and MxSpy are also victims of data theft

Tech tech online media Techcrunch has revealed a huge data breach in the United States that shows the extent of spyware use on mobile phones. The leaked data includes call logs, text messages, granular location data and other victim personal device data from the “spy” apps TheTruthSpy, Copy9, MxSpy and others that allow downloading silently streaming the contents of a phone without the knowledge of its owner.

TechCrunch reviewed data covering the period from March 4 to April 14, 2022, which is six weeks of the most recent data stored in the database at the time of the leak. The media thus discovered that the 360,000 victims were located in the big cities, the urban centers, and that their movements were made on the main transport lines. Over this period, hundreds of new devices were “hacked” every day thanks to these applications.

To protect yourself, you sometimes have to buy a new phone

To get rid of spyware on your smartphone, you can try to block access to cloud accounts by deauthenticating connected devices and browsers, changing passwords and answers to secret questions and making sure you have strong authentication (2FA) enabled. On a smartphone, it is possible to do a factory restore of the device, to uninstall unknown or unused applications. The ultimate solution, however, is to get a new device with a new phone number and not reuse the same online accounts.
