Spain recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires, saying that the decision was permanent.
This was preceded by derogatory remarks by Argentine President Javier Miley about the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, reports " Voice of America.
Right-wing libertarian Miley reportedly made remarks about Sanchez's wife, Begona Gomez, at a rally in Madrid.
Gomez is under legal investigation after allegations of influence peddling and corruption.
"We are not interested in escalation and do not want it, but the government has an obligation to protect the dignity and sovereignty of Spanish institutions, especially when aggression occurs in the Spanish capital,– Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez told reporters, commenting on the decision to recall the ambassador.
