SpaceX has announced the start of public beta testing of Starlink satellite Internet. Users have already received an offer to purchase a set of equipment for signal reception and were able to familiarize themselves with the first (and so far the only) tariff for “space” communication services from Elon Musk.
In addition, official applications for installing and configuring an Internet connection have appeared in the App Store and Google Play. The name of the test program, like all Musk’s other projects, is eloquent – “Better than nothing,” Channel 24 reports .
How the Starlink beta test will work
According to SpaceX, the Starlink public testing program will be rolled out in the US and Canada before the end of this year. According to the testimony of the first users who received an invitation to participate in the “beta”, the company promises an Internet connection speed in the range of 50 to 150 Mbps and the required latency of 20 to 40 ms.
How much does Starlink kit cost
The price of the starter equipment, which includes the “plate” itself, a set of fasteners and a Wi-Fi router, will be $ 499 , and the cost of connection will be $ 99 per month. The connection is established and configured using a proprietary mobile application for Android and iOS.
It is noted that the application itself and the installation process are not much different from other programs for managing Wi-Fi routers, and includes instructions for installing a Starlink satellite dish, a tool for checking the Internet speed, and also informs the user about the connection status and signal quality.
The company does not report the timing of the expansion of the Starlink coverage area to other regions.
