Elon Musk's SpaceX company launched a Falcon 9 launch vehicle with a South Korean lunar orbiter. The launch took place from the Cape Canaveral Space Center (Florida), the broadcast was on the SpaceX .
The lunar probe was named KPLO (Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter – Korean Lunar Experimental Orbiter). Its development cost about $180 million, it will stay in lunar orbit for about a year.
< p>This is the first lunar mission of South Korea. The spacecraft weighs 678 kg, among its tasks – mapping the relief of the moon. This should help identify areas suitable for a possible landing planned for 2030, Space.com reports .
South Korea is one of the countries that signed the US-initiated "Agreements of Artemis" on the exploration of space and the Moon.
