The South Korean and Japanese militaries said the missile traveled between 250 and 290 kilometers at a maximum altitude of 30 to 50 kilometers. The relatively low trajectory appeared to be consistent with the flight characteristics of some of North Korea's new short-range weapons designed to evade missile defenses.

Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada, said the projectile fell outside the country's exclusive economic sea zone and noted that the North Korean intensified tests had “significantly increased” regional tensions. Tokyo lodged a protest against Pyongyang through its embassies in Beijing.

Seoul's nuclear envoy, Kim Gunn, held separate phone conversations with his US counterparts and Japanese to discuss trilateral cooperation to counter the growing nuclear threat and increased North Korean weapons tests, the South's Foreign Ministry said.

South Korean officials say the North could try further ramp up the pressure by carrying out its first nuclear test since 2017 in the coming weeks.

Wednesday's incident comes after the North fired dozens of missiles last week coinciding with the massive joint air exercises in Seoul and Washington which, according to Pyongyang, are an invasion rehearsal.
