A snowstorm hit southeastern Alberta this weekend. The city of Calgary received 22 cm of snow between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

The heavy snowfall caused accidents on the roads. The Calgary Police Service says it received 177 reports of incidents, including 18 collisions with injuries on Saturday and Sunday morning. The SPC specifies that more than one call can be issued for the same incident.

According to Rob Griffith of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the storm originated in the United States. She is currently heading towards Manitoba, he warns. ECCC has also issued warnings for Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Some areas of these provinces could receive up to 40 cm of snow.

The federal agency has also reduced the territory of the snow warning in Alberta. It now covers the Cold Lake, Lac la Biche, Bonnyville and Saint-Paul region until Monday morning.

Rob Griffith warns another system will overtake Alberta tonight.

We see a cold air mass settling over Alberta. Tonight and tomorrow evening we will have extreme wind chill values, he explains, adding that wind chills could reach -40 in some locations.

An extreme cold warning covers central and eastern parts of the province, including Cochrane and Barrhead, but sparing Calgary and Edmonton.

Temperatures will ease on Monday, but the cold could be extreme again Monday evening and during the night from Monday to Tuesday, reports the x27;warning issued Sunday at 3:34 p.m.

Earlier this week, Avalanche Canada issued an avalanche warning (New window) for several areas of the province. It is in effect from February 29 to March 4. In the mountains that straddle Alberta and British Columbia, more than fifteen avalanches have been recorded since Friday, most accidentally caused by skiers.

A person's weight triggered an avalanche on an adjacent slope. This demonstrates the sensitivity of the snow layer, describes Ari Hanna, forecaster at Avalanche Canada, to demonstrate the dangerousness of the situation.

Monday, Avalanche Canada must decide whether to renew the avalanche warning due to the recent snowstorm that hit the region.
