Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will work at a frequency of up to 4.2 GHz

Qualcomm plans to release a new 10-chip Snapdragon 8 gen4 system in May. Details about the chipset's performance have gradually been revealed over the past few months, with the latest leaks showing test results.

According to an insider from Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8gen4 prototype has a main core clocked at 4.2GHz . The source confirms the fact that the core in question is something special, possibly an Orion core, and is likely to score around 3,000 points per core on Geekbench6. In addition, there are reports that the chipset scored around 10,000 points in multi-core tests.

For comparison, the current generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has a main Cortex-X4 core with a clock frequency of 3.3 GHz and average scores of around 2,200 and 7,000 in Geekbench's single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. These numbers show a potential 30% increase in processor performance for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 prototype.

Given the advertised core frequencies, netizens have expressed concern about the chipset's potential power consumption and heat performance when compared to the Snapdragon 888 — by Qualcomm's flagship chipset released in late 2020, which had serious performance and temperature issues. However, according to Digital Chat Station, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is unlikely to be similar to Snapdragon 888, as it is based on TSMC's modern 3nm process.
