(Toronto) Shortstop Marcus Semien has agreed to a one-year, US $ 18 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, one person revealed to The Associated Press.
The source spoke on condition of anonymity on Tuesday because the deal is subject to a successful physical examination.
Semien will become the second all-star and fourth free agent to join the Blue Jays this offseason.
The Toronto squad has awarded a six-year contract worth US $ 150 million to outfielder George Springer. The Blue Jays also signed right-hander Kirby Yates and Tyler Chatwood to a one-year contract in addition to bringing southpaw Robbie Ray home for a season.
Semien batted .223 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs in 53 games last season, his sixth with the Oakland Athletics. He pocketed just over $ 4.8 million on a pro rata basis of his annual salary of $ 13 million.
Semien finished third in the ballot for the American MVP in 2019. He had slammed 33 long balls and produced 92 points.
The Blue Jays were 32-28 in the cropped 2020 season, taking third place in the American’s Eastern Division. They were swept in two games by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first playoff round.
