A shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama on Sunday night, Nov. 10, left one person dead and 12 others injured, WSFA reports. Associated Press.

The events took place on the weekend when the university traditionally hosts alumni.

A few hours later, it was announced that one person had been arrested.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said 25-year-old Jaquez Myrick of Montgomery was taken into custody as he tried to leave the scene of the campus shooting. He was found to be carrying a handgun with a device that allows him to fire automatically.

The agency said Myrick faces federal weapons charges. The agency did not say whether he was a student at the historically black university. Authorities said the 18-year-old who died was not a student, but that students were among the victims.

It was unclear whether Myrick had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

In addition to the twelve wounded, four others suffered non-gunshot injuries. Their conditions are currently unknown.

The FBI has joined the investigation and asked eyewitnesses to share any video footage they have.

The university announced that classes were canceled on Monday.

This is not the first shooting at Tuskegee University. The Montgomery Advertiser recalled that in September 2023, two campus visitors were shot and two more students were injured in a shooting at a student dormitory. Campus officials said the incident occurred during an “unsanctioned party.”

The university, located 40 miles from the Alabama capital of Montgomery, has about 3,000 students.

In 1966, the university became the first historically black college to receive the status of a registered national landmark. In 1974, it was also designated a National Historic Site.
