According to Russian media, the shooting occurred because of a business dispute between the co-owners of Wildberries. The company's press service said that the husband of Wildberries founder Tatyana Bakalchuk, Vladislav, tried to get into the company's office. He was not allowed in, and the shooting began.

Bakalchuk himself told the media that the incident was a provocation, and that in fact he was the victim of history. According to him, he and his team were attacked when he arrived at the office for negotiations on stopping the construction of warehouses.
