Last week, the intelligence agency South Korea has reported that North Korea has sent 1,500 special forces to Russia's Far East for training and acclimatization at military bases there. The agency suggested that they would likely take part in combat operations in Ukraine.

A White House National Security Council spokesman on Friday, October 18, could not confirm reports that North Korean troops were fighting on Russia's side, but noted that if so, "it would mark a dangerous development in Russia's war against Ukraine".

Russia and North Korea have denied that they are engaged in arms sales. The Kremlin has also rejected South Korean claims that North Korea may have sent troops to help Russia in its standoff with Ukraine.
