Seoul and Warsaw: Sending North Korean Troops to War with Ukraine Is a Global Security Threat

South Korean President Yun Suk-yol and Polish President Andrzej Duda condemned the sending of North Korean troops to Russia to participate in the war against Ukraine as a global security threat, the South Korean leader's office reported.

The two leaders held a summit meeting and agreed to expedite the completion of a new contract to export South Korean K2 tanks to Poland by the end of the year, Yoon said at a joint news conference with Duda, Reuters reported.

Yoon also said South Korea and Poland would establish a new forum for defense dialogue and cooperate closely on security issues.

South Korea, which has become a major arms exporter, signed a framework agreement in 2022 to export self-propelled howitzers, tanks and fighter jets worth about $22 billion.

Let us recall that Poland is also increasing military spending in response to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea's largest defense company, has signed agreements with Poland worth a total of $9.2 billion to supply 364 howitzers and 290 missile defense systems from 2022.

Industrial and defense contracting firm Hyundai Rotem has a framework agreement in 2022 for 1,000 K2 tanks, but has so far signed a $3.26 billion contract to export 180 tanks.

“We agreed that North Korea's deployment of troops to Russia is a direct violation of UN Security Council resolutions and the UN Charter, and constitutes a provocation that extends beyond the Korean Peninsula and Europe to threaten global security,” – emphasized Yun.

BAGNET recalls that the DPRK has sent 3,000 troops to Russia to support the Kremlin's war against Ukraine, South Korean lawmakers said on Wednesday, October 23, after a briefing held by the National Intelligence Agency.

The United States also said it has evidence that North Korea has sent 3,000 troops to Russia for possible deployment in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that North Korea is preparing to send up to 12,000 troops to help Moscow wage war.
