Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Vice Chairman Marco Rubio (R-S.C.) and Committee Chairman Mark Warner (D-N.Y.) issued a statement regarding "apparent efforts by foreign adversaries to influence the upcoming U.S. presidential election."
"With less than 100 days until the election, it is clear that our foreign adversaries have a vested interest in disrupting the democratic process," – the senators said in a statement released Wednesday, August 14, Voice of America reports.
The senators said they were awaiting additional information from the intelligence community and law enforcement about the extent of recent foreign efforts to target the campaign.
They expressed grave concern over a report from Microsoft that cybercriminals may have hacked the presidential campaign's infrastructure.
“We condemn any type of potential influence efforts by foreign adversaries and urge the intelligence community and law enforcement to urgently investigate these reports,” the senators said, adding that the administration and both political parties must make clear that interference in the American democratic process will have consequences.
