Scientists representing the Memphis Science Laboratory conducted a study in the course of which they found out why it becomes more difficult to learn a foreign language with age. According to experts, the increase in the substance adenosine leads to the fact that the elderly person is not able to learn to play a musical instrument.

Scientists conducted tests on rodents in the laboratory. For some time, experts have been performing experiments on mice. According to the results of the experiment, they found that with age there is an increase in the amount of adenosine substance in the thalamus, which is a part of the brain involved in the processing and assimilation of information that comes from the sense organs. The substance can activate pathways that reduce the ability to perceive new data. For this reason, older mice are not able to distinguish between two identical melodies. At the moment, experts are using genetic methods and various drugs to reduce the level of adenosine in rodents.
Researchers played one melody in the background for a long period of time. After that, a motive that differed in tonality from the background one played for a short time, and the mice distinguished it. During blockage of adenosine in the auditory cortex, the concentration of neurons instantly increases, which allows you to respond to sound. It is called the neuroplastic process.
