There is an opinion that a dangerous disease kills only the elderly and those who have had serious illnesses, and therefore the average mortality rate has hardly increased, since the disease does not lead to death of people prematurely. A new study by a group of scientists from Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States refutes an earlier assumption. It turns out that the coronavirus takes 10 years of life from people. To establish that figure, they looked at the death rates of all American citizens who died in the three spring months. As a result, we got a result that turned out to be disappointing. At the same time, they compared mortality not only from COVID-19, but also other diagnoses most common in the country.

The statistics in the UK are even worse. There, the average number of years of life lost for women was 12 years, and for men it was 2 years more. In Russia, such calculations have not yet been carried out, but, according to preliminary estimates, the results will not lag behind those found in the United States.

In addition, scientists have found that in some countries the coronavirus has come out on top in terms of mortality among the population. Previously, people most often died prematurely from coronary heart disease.
