Asthma can act as one of the protective factors in the development of coronavirus in humans. The corresponding opinion was expressed by Academician Alexander Karaulov, one of the employees of the Sechenov University.

Scientists in a number of works have proven that during the COVID-19 pandemic, people suffering from lung diseases are at risk. The pathogen affects the functioning of the respiratory system, and in the presence of other pathologies there, the prognosis becomes more negative. Karaulov spoke about the results of the work of his colleagues. They found that asthma is much less common in comorbid patients with coronavirus infection than is usual in the population. This creates the likelihood that asthma is protecting the sufferer from infection.
One of the reasons for this is the fact that this is a special type of inflammation common to all allergy sufferers, namely Th-2-mediated. The academician does not exclude that the polarization of the immune response in this direction protects citizens with allergic asthma from the serious course of COVID-19.
