By-products of beverage production can be recycled and turned into biofuels and industrial chemical synthesis.

Coffee and alcohol waste should be used to produce biofuels to contribute to the ecology of the planet.

This is stated in the material of the portal shuba.life.

It is noted that a team from Armenia and Poland published in the journal Energies the results of a study on the use of biogas and biohydrogen produced from beverage waste to achieve carbon zero targets.

By-products of the beverage industry were found to include coffee grounds, sugarcane bagasse, rice, wheat straw, brewing grains and sorghum leaves. However, these wastes can be recycled and turned into biofuels and industrial chemical synthesis.

“Among the various methods for producing biofuels, anaerobic digestion and dark fermentation have shown significant promise, the scientists say. However, there are technical challenges with using these methods to turn biomass waste into valuable alternative fuels, and this is the only thing holding back beverage companies,” the article says.

In doing so, scientists have demonstrated that alcohol waste and spent coffee beans are promising substrates with a high content of organic matter, and concluded that the use of these wastes can increase the economic efficiency of biofuel production in the future.
