Between 2009 and 2015, researchers collected and analyzed biological samples from college students with respiratory tract infections. In total, more than 260 such cases were noted, moreover, in 150 of them the respiratory viral nature was recorded, which was confirmed by PCR testing. Along the way, scientists monitored close contacts between patients, their friends, other halves and roommates. The experts recruited over 550 close contacts. Of these, 162 cases had symptoms of IDP, and in 106 cases the diagnosis was confirmed on the basis of PCR.
For the vast majority of participants in the work, the gene expression test was able to predict a viral infection with high accuracy a couple of days before the first manifestations appeared. The results will help create additional measures to contain various kinds of infections, including COVID-19
