As part of their work, its authors analyzed the level of this hormone in more than 200 men who were admitted to the hospital with a positive test result for COVID-19. It turned out that about 51% of them experienced hypogonadism, a condition when the body does not produce enough testosterone. This effect was observed even in those who did not have severe symptoms of infection. The hormone not only plays one of the main roles in the development of genitals and muscle growth, but is also involved in the work of immune responses, including to viral infections. Low testosterone levels lead to an increased risk of death from the flu, high blood pressure, or heart problems.
The authors of the study believe that men entering a medical facility with COVID-19 should have their hormone levels measured. As a therapy, TRT can be used.
