A team of scientists in the framework of observations of space has discovered a planet whose annual cycle is 19 hours. Superhot Neptune rotates around the star LTT 9779, writes Nature Astronomy.
The planet, which is unique in its kind, was discovered by means of the transit method using the TESS telescope. Confirmed the existence of a celestial body and in the observatory ESO la Silla, located in Chile. According to its characteristics, LTT 9779 is similar to the Sun, the age of the star reaches 2 billion years, but there are twice as many heavy elements. The planet itself received the designation LTT 9779b, the length of the year there is only 19 hours. The surface temperature reaches 1.7 thousand degrees Celsius, the mass of the object is twice as high as on Neptune, but the density has similar characteristics.
As a rule, planets similar to LTT 9779b eventually lose their atmosphere, which translates them into the category of ultra-short-period ones. It is not yet clear to astronomers how the heavenly body was formed. Considering the radiation emanating from the luminary, it should have destroyed the planet's atmosphere, turning it into a rocky world.
