Researchers from the University of Glasgow have created an innovative wireless communication antenna that combines the unique properties of metamaterials with modern signal processing. Such development may become the basis of 6G communication networks of the future.
The prototype of a digital dynamic metasurface antenna (dynamic metasurface antenna, DMA) is controlled through a high-speed programmable gate array (FPGA). It is the world's first antenna designed and tested to operate in the 60 GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) band, which is reserved for industrial, scientific and medical applications under international law.
« ;This carefully designed prototype is a very promising development in the field of next-generation adaptive antennas», — said Professor Kammer H. Abbasi, one of the lead authors of the study.
< p>Abbasi noted that the device "goes beyond the scope of previous advanced developments in the field of programmable antennas that reconfigurable». Although other DMAs have already been demonstrated by researchers around the world, our prototype significantly advances this technology, — he said.
Increased data transfer rates will even make it possible to create holographic images, broadcasting in real time convincing 3D models of people and objects anywhere in the world.
