Scientists have created an innovative robot that will prevent space accidents in Earth's orbit

Engineers from the United States have created a robotic system for servicing satellites in orbit. This technology allows satellites to be repaired and upgraded. Such a system will help significantly extend their service life and reduce maintenance costs. This, in turn, will reduce the possibility of space accidents.

It is noted that the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are responsible for the development of the robotic system. It is reported that after successful tests in a vacuum chamber and partnership with Northrop Grumman, the launch of a robotic system is planned for 2026 This launch will open a new era reliable and flexible space infrastructure.

By the way, this complex has already been transferred to Northrop Grumman SpaceLogistics for integration with the Mission Robotics Vehicle spacecraft.

We should add that the successful testing was an important milestone for the demonstration of robotic servicing in orbit. And the technology itself will allow servicing commercial and government satellites. It will be able to conduct inspections, orbit corrections, upgrades and repairs.

It is known that satellites are in geostationary orbit, at a distance of about 36 thousand kilometers from the Earth. They play an important role in communications, national security and scientific research.

Due to the impossibility of repair, satellites often have additional systems and fuel, which increases their weight and cost.

However, after launch in 2026, the system will undergo verification and calibration, and then begin servicing the satellites.

This will ensure the sustainability of space infrastructure and will be the first step towards a revolutionary change in space architecture.
