Scientists have created a unique laser Internet technology that is 16 times faster than analogues

Researchers from Aalto University have developed a new technology to significantly improve data transmission via optical fiber. This technology will speed up data transmission by 16 times.

Scientists have created a method for generating «vortices» of light — small spirals of light energy that can increase network throughput.

These vortices of light are similar to hurricanes in a laser beam and can carry information due to their unique structure.

To create them, the team used metal nanoparticles that formed special structures known as quasicrystals. This allows for the creation of complex vortices of light that can encode more data.

«This study is about the relationship between the symmetry and rotality of a vortex, that is, which vortices we can generate with which symmetries. Our design of quasicrystals is on the border between order and chaos», — said researcher Paevi Tormä.

This approach could significantly improve data transmission efficiency, increasing the bandwidth of fiber optic cables by 8−16 times compared to existing methods.

Although the technology still needs development, it has great potential for the future in the telecommunications and data storage industries.
