Scientists in the study found an unexpected effect of having sex on neurons. Regular sex improves memory and attention, which is also important for older citizens.

Back in 2010, scientists from the United States found that rats having sex exhibit calmer behavior than their virgin relatives. At first, the experts thought it was all about glucocorticoid hormones, but after a while they managed to fix an increase in the number of neurons in the hippocampus in animals. It turned out that the “growth” of nerve cells occurred almost immediately after intimacy with the female. Gradually, the level of hormones began to decline, while the appearance of new neurons did not stop. There was also an increase in the number of connections between brain cells. A similar result was obtained three years later by the staff of the University of Maryland. It turned out that middle-aged rodents mating for 30 minutes better remember and learn new things. The effect came to naught if sexual intercourse lost its regularity.
Similar experiments were carried out by scientists from South Korea. They learned that being able to have sex restores cognitive ability after suffering chronic stress. In 2016, experts from Canada proved the benefits of intimacy for humans. First, a survey was conducted among almost 80 women, and then they took a recognition test. Those who had sex often did better.
Scientists from the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Malaysia found that people over 60 who continue to have sex are less likely to show problems with memory and attention than their peers. This may be due to the fact that intimacy has a positive effect on brain function, RIA Novosti writes.
