Scientists are using VR games to help deaf children understand language

Scientists from Imperial College London developed the Bears project – for Both Ears, which aims to help children with dual hearing implants overcome profound deafness. This is reported by The Guardian.

As part of the project, they use computer games to improve language comprehension. One of the games used is to operate a food stall in virtual reality. The player earns points for completing each order, while the pace of the game increases and the orders become more difficult.

The cartoon characters order from them faster and faster, and the background noises get louder and more confusing. This causes difficulties, but the game helps improve the child's ability to localize sound and, as a result, understand language.

Research conducted by scientists has shown that the ability to accurately determine the location of sound helps in understanding language. In noisy situations, experts note that the conversation becomes clearer. Using computer games, scientists can help improve the ability of children with profound deafness to localize sounds.
