The Guardian reports: British-Canadian scientist Geoffrey Hinton, known as the «godfather» of artificial intelligence (AI), has warned that humanity could face the threat of destruction in just 30 years. Hinton previously estimated the probability of such a catastrophe at 10%, but now increased it to 20%, given the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology and the possibility of its misuse.
The scientist notes that AI is developing much faster than human intelligence, and this, in turn, creates dangerous prerequisites for the potential use of the technology by «bad players». He compares the current level of AI development to the intelligence of a three-year-old child, but the pace of improvement of this technology is extremely rapid.
Hinton called for state regulation of the development of artificial intelligence. He emphasizes that AI companies cannot ensure the safety of the technology on their own without regulatory intervention. In his opinion, only government measures can promote AI security research and prevent negative scenarios.
The issue of controlling the development of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly urgent. Hinton believes that his statement may encourage governments around the world to create effective mechanisms to regulate this powerful technology.
