Planet Labs satellite images have revealed the construction in China of an unusual flat-topped vessel that could become the world's first “civilian aircraft carrier”. The ship is being built at Guangzhou Shipyard International in the Chinese province of Guangdong, CNN writes.
The ship in the photos has attracted the attention of military experts with its unusual characteristics. Thus, former US Navy submarine commander Thomas Shugart noted that this ship is much smaller than previous Chinese aircraft carriers and even smaller than Type 075 amphibious assault ships.
Experts suggest that China may now build the world's first “conditionally a civilian aircraft carrier” that will disguise itself as an oceanographic research vessel.

Its lightweight design limits its use in active combat zones. Given the characteristics, the ship can be used as a helicopter carrier or drone carrier for the country's coast guard.
The publication reminds that the construction of this vessel is taking place against the background of the already rapid expansion of the Chinese fleet. By the way, it is already the largest in the world and includes more than 340 warships.
As you know, China recently launched its most powerful aircraft carrier “Fujian” with a displacement of 80,000 tons, which can potentially join the fleet until 2026.
