Saskatchewan broke 10 daily high temperature records Tuesday, including one set nearly a century ago, according to Environment Canada.

< p class="StyledBodyHtmlParagraph-sc-48221190-4 hnvfyV">On Wednesday, the agency released a report (New window) highlighting places in the province where records were broken the day after Christmas.

The Leader region on Tuesday experienced the highest daily temperature in the province at 11°C, breaking the previous record of 9.5°C, set in 1980.

These records also include the areas of Moose Jaw with 9.3°C compared to 7.1°C in 1994 as well as Wynyard, where the mercury touched 8.6°C on Tuesday, while the peak reached was previously 6.4°C in 2005.

Saskatoon also recorded a new record of 6.2°C, beating the previous record of 4.4°C set in 1928.

These new records were announced as the province experienced an exceptionally dry and hot fall season. The lack of precipitation has some farmers worried about next growing season's crops.

CBC Saskatchewan weather specialist Ethan Williams says the heat and drought are due to the El Niño phenomenon. This phenomenon should continue during the new year, he indicates.

What we have seen so far could very well be the case for the first months of 2024. According to Environment Canada, there is a 60 to 70% chance that temperatures will be above normal during the month of February.

He adds that #x27;Agency for Oceanic and Atmospheric Observations predicts that there is a good chance that El Niño will decrease in intensity from April to June, noting that temperatures of the Pacific Ocean near the equator are starting to return to normal.
