Sad statistics: the number of marriages has decreased in Ukraine, but the number of divorces has increased

In the first half of 2024, there was one divorce for every five marriages in Ukraine. One and a half times more couples broke up than in the same period last year.

On the other hand, the number of marriage contracts increased. This was reported in “Opendatabot” statistics.

In January-June 2024, Ukrainians created 72,700 new families. This is 15% less than in the same period last year (86 thousand), and a third less than in 2022 (103.9 thousand).

It is worth noting that after the wedding boom in the first year of the full-scale invasion, the number of marriages gradually declined each year. This year, for the first time, even fewer new families were created than before the Great War, Opendatabot says.

However this year, marriages became more aware: Ukrainians concluded more than 3,700 marriage contracts in six months. That's a quarter more than in 2023, and nearly half the number in 2022.

After a dip in the first year of a full-scale invasion, divorces continue to rise. 15,500 couples broke up their marriages in six months. This is 1.5 times more than in the same period last year, and 18% more than in 2021.

In terms of the number of divorces, the following are leading:

  • Kyiv – 2118;
  • Dnipropetrovsk region – 1404;
  • Kharkiv region – 1148;
  • Odesa region – 1076;
  • Kyiv region – 1072.

Excluding data from occupied territories and regions where hostilities are taking place, the fewest divorces were registered in Zakarpattia (224), Chernivtsi (268) and Rivne (296) regions.
