Russia's response: in France, exercises with the jamming of satellite communications have unexpectedly begun

Russia could use the Krasukha-S4 and Tobol systems to jam navigation in the Baltic region, French journalists believe .

On May 27, the Black Crown 24 exercise began in France, during which the Air Force should study the principle of operation of electronic warfare (EW) equipment that suppresses satellite navigation signals (GNSS), as well as work out countermeasures . This is happening against the background of disruptions of sea and air navigation in the Baltic region, which are allegedly behind the Russian Federation, writes the Opex360 portal.

It is reported that from May 27 to June 7, 2024, part of the French airspace will be closed for conducting experiments with EW. A corresponding notification should have appeared in advance in the Meteor system from the French Civil Aviation Safety Authority (DSAC), but this did not happen. At the same time, a notice to pilots (NOTAM) was issued by the French Federation of Free Aviation (FFVL).

“We assume that the Black Crown 24 was prepared very recently”, — said experts of the specialized portal aeroVF.

The NOTAM said that the Air Force will suppress GNSS using large-sized equipment at several sites . The military is expected to jam the signal for only 2-3 hours a day in a designated area centered on the Puy-de-Dôme department in two echelons — in a radius of 160 kilometers and at an altitude of 1.5 kilometers, and in a radius of 320 kilometers at an altitude of 5 kilometers.

“The purpose of these exercises — to practice the actions of crews performing ground support tasks in an electromagnetic environment disturbed by GPS interference “, — reads the message.

The publication emphasized that for several months, serious violations in the work of GNSS were observed in the Baltic region. Disruptions affected sea navigation and air traffic. The authors of the publication believe that Moscow may be behind these violations, since the Russians have modern EW means. The Krasukha-S4 and Tobol systems, which are located, in particular, in Kaliningrad, are mentioned as examples.
